This summer, we’re inviting you to become part of our centenary story.

Over the coming months, our curators and experts will uncover fascinating stories from our extensive material culture, natural history and archive collections, alongside lesser-known stories from life at Quex House and Gardens.

Through a special series of talks, you’ll hear directly from the people who care for these collections and discover the unexpected stories hidden within everyday objects, archives, gardens and more.

All talks are included with standard admission. No booking required, simply drop in at the scheduled times.

The Talks

Our Relationship with Nature and the Victorian Walled Garden

with Sue Harris, Head Gardener
Friday 10 July, 1:30-2:30pm

From productive kitchen garden to thriving market garden, the story of our Victorian Walled Garden is one of change, cultivation, and our evolving relationship with nature.

Join Sue as she uncovers the history of this special space, the plants that grew here, and what the garden tells us about Victorian life and values.

Quex House as a VAD Hospital in the First World War

with Hazel Basford, Archivist
Date TBC

During the First World War, Quex House became a VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) hospital. What stories lie in our archives about this transformation? And what do they tell us about the people – patients, staff, and families – whose lives intersected here?

Join Hazel as she explores her Master’s research into this remarkable chapter of our house’s history, uncovering personal stories and local connections that bring the past to life.

Thanks to a grant from Arts Council England, we’re inviting our local communities to help connect the museum’s past, present and future as part of our centenary year.

Alongside our talks programme, we’ll also be running a series of hands-on creative workshops throughout the summer. From Adinkra printing to poetry writing, these sessions offer the chance to respond creatively to what you discover in the museum and its collections.

Your work will then form part of a special community exhibition opening in October.

Full details and dates will be announced soon.
