University Visits
The Powell-Cotton Museum strives to support and inspire the researchers of the future.
We can work with universities in a variety of ways, from creating collections-based hands-on workshops for student groups, to supporting individual student placements within the Museum.
Group sessions
The Museum’s collections team will work with tutors to create bespoke sessions, pairing the Museum’s historic collections with the needs of your course.
Examples of sessions we currently facilitate include:
- an undergraduate comparative anatomy workshop for Canterbury Christ Church University, using mammal specimens from across the collection
- an undergraduate statistics workshop for University of Kent’s Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology using duiker skulls
- a morphometrics workshop for Canterbury Christ Church University using primate skills.
Workshops do not have to be limited to the Natural Science collections. In the past we have run sessions using the textile collection and the ethnographic collections.
University placements
We work with a number of university departments to offer medium and long-term student placements as part of undergraduate courses.

Subject Specialist Group Visits
We are happy to welcome subject specialist groups who are not affiliated with a University or other higher education institution.

Diverse collections from around the world
The museum permanently exhibits unique natural history collections in magnificent dioramas and world material culture objects from the African and Asian continents. Visitors can also view local archaeology from the Thanet coastline.
