This week the scaffolders and our Maintenance Officer have begun preparations for the temporary roof covering that will sit above the worksite. This is to ensure that work can continue in most weathers, speeding up the project and also to protect all the precious museum objects within.

Part of that is a structure within Gallery 1 to support the structure above. We also need to protect the glass from the risk of vibration. This is being monitored through special equipment but we have had to temporarily cover the glass whilst this phase of the work takes place.

During your visit for the rest of this season, Gallery 1 won’t be open but will be back better than ever for February 2025. We understand that Gallery 1 is a huge highlight of our museum displays but this work will protect them for future generations so we thank everyone for their understanding.
