We are now in the second phase of our thorough conservation work with our stored collections. This work is part of a large storage project which will move collections from storage conditions suffering water ingress and pest infestation to more suitable areas.
Part of the process is unpacking and repacking collections with fresh materials, in correctly sized boxes.
Currently we are working with our very precious primate collection which is regularly requested by researchers.
This particular specimen is a male Agile Monkey.

Celebrating St. Valentine`s day today by sharing our charming collection of Valentine`s cards, each associated with Henry Horace Powell Cotton (1830-1994), Percy Powell-Cotton’s father.
All the cards are very intricate and highly decorated. Each one has a thin paper front, of lacelike appearance. Almost veil like, perhaps to hide the emotions held by the sender. Usually decorated with colourful flowers, one also has the image of a locket and printed words ‘My heart with love is beating’.
Another of the cards is in an envelope addressed to Horace Powell Cotton Esqr. Quakes, Ramsgate. It is stamped with a ‘Penny Red’ stamp and contains the verse above written within. In 1865 Horace, as he was known, married Matilda Christina Gordon (1841-1916). She was from a Scottish family and was living in Scotland in her early years so it is
unlikely this card came from her, but some of the others may well have.

This week our artist in residence @juliaellenlancaster_ceramics, has been working with local groups as part of the exciting community outreach initiative - The Sunshine Project.
Here we can see Julia teaching the group how to make leaf imprints into the clay as they prepare sculptures for the Spring into the Museum Tree Trail. Look out for the faces in the trees as you discover the trees of #Quexgardens during our Spring into the Museum event next month!

Our archivist, Hazel, picked it up to inspect it for any conservation needs and opened it to discover what appears to be a self-portrait of Percy Powell Cotton inside the front cover!
What a lovely surprise. (And now we’re wondering if he sketched in any other books!)

The museum team is actively addressing the presence of carpet beetles in one of our collection areas by quarantining, treating, and rehousing the affected specimens. By bagging a skull in a sealed plastic bag and freezing it at -30c to eliminate any insects, the team is ensuring the preservation and accessibility of the specimens for future visitors and researchers.
In this video, our Conservator demonstrates the process of bagging and sealing one of our skulls. She carefully handles the skull, ensuring its protection by placing it in a bag and sealing it securely. This procedure safeguards the integrity and preservation of the specimen, maintaining its quality for the future.

Our new Namibian Narratives display focuses on the work of six makers from Northern Namibia. We had concentrated on working with women because when we began a research project on the historical collection, it became clear that the women were much more knowledgeable than the men! Women were regarded as the keepers of culture and heritage; however, it has been suggested to us that crafts associated with men, such as iron smelting, are being overlooked because there is so much focus on women, so we are focusing on a gentleman for our next project!
When you visit us for Museum Movie Magic, you’ll see a video of an Angolan blacksmith called Kavela, which was filmed in the 1930s by Tony and Diana. The video will be accompanied by a tool Kavela has made. Here is a shot of him in action.
